Can you finance a chiller process?

Yes, chiller processs are financed as a standard asset purchase, usually on hire purchase or a lease, with the machine itself acting as the security. UK prices typically run £3,000 to £70,000, and most deals are written over 12–60 months with a deposit of around 0–15%. Decisions typically take 24–48 hours. Used machines are financeable too, usually with a shorter term.

What buyers actually specify

Guide prices for sizing a finance agreement, not quotes. Manufacturers in this market mostly price on application, so where a current UK list price could not be confirmed the row describes a specification class rather than naming a model. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Machine or specification Guide price Type
Portable Process Chiller (up to 10kW) £3,000 – £9,000 Portable Chiller
Air-Cooled Industrial Process Chiller £9,000 – £28,000 Air-Cooled Chiller
Central Process Chiller (multi-machine, 20–50kW) £28,000 – £70,000 Central Chiller

Tax benefits

This equipment qualifies for the Annual Investment Allowance, so a purchase or HP agreement can be deducted against taxable profit in the year of purchase. Finance lease payments are typically deductible in full from profit as they are paid, and refinancing an owned asset does not change its capital allowances position.

Market context

Process chillers are bought by moulders to hold mould temperature and cycle time; without adequate cooling a press either runs slower to let parts set naturally or produces warped, dimensionally inconsistent mouldings. A portable chiller is commonly bought with a single new press as a direct part of that order, while a central chiller serving multiple machines is usually a later, standalone decision as a factory adds presses and wants one cooling system rather than a unit at every machine. Replacement is typically driven by adding presses that exceed the existing chiller’s cooling capacity, or a move to a central system for energy efficiency, rather than mechanical failure of a well-maintained unit.

Bad credit?

Several of our 200+ lenders specialise in businesses with imperfect credit histories. You may need a larger deposit or personal guarantee, but options exist. Checking your options here does not affect your credit score, because we do not run a credit search to match you. A lender will run their own checks only if you decide to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a chiller for every press?
Not necessarily. A portable chiller dedicated to one press is common for a smaller shop or where different jobs need different water temperatures. A central chiller can serve several presses at once through a distribution manifold, which is usually more cost-effective once a factory has three or more machines running similar mould temperatures, but it needs enough spare capacity for the busiest combination of jobs running at the same time.
How is chiller size decided for finance purposes?
Chiller sizing is based on the cooling load of the moulds being run, not the tonnage of the press, so a small press running a mould with a lot of surface area can need more cooling than a larger press on a simple part. Lenders financing a chiller alongside a new press will usually accept the press supplier’s chiller sizing recommendation as the specification for the agreement.
Can I finance a used process chiller?
Yes, used chillers are routinely financed, typically up to around 10-12 years old, since refrigeration compressors and pumps are well-understood components with an active repair and parts market. As with other ancillaries, an independent valuation is not usually needed given the relatively lower value compared with the press itself. Lenders will generally ask whether the refrigerant type used still has an active service and gas supply market, since this affects how easily the chiller can be kept running over the finance term.
How quickly can chiller finance be approved?
Portable and air-cooled chillers under £25,000 are typically approved within 24 hours, often same-day. A central chiller serving multiple machines is a larger, more bespoke installation and may take a few days longer as the lender reviews the full specification and how it fits with the rest of the plant. For a central system, supplying the cooling load calculation alongside the quote helps the lender confirm the chiller is correctly sized rather than needing to query it, which is the most common cause of delay.
